A Matter of Breeding: A Biting History of Pedigree Dogs and How the Quest for Status has Harmed Man’s Best Friend

Reading Michael Brandow’s new book, “A Matter of Breeding: A Biting History of Pedigree Dogs and How the Quest for Status has Harmed Man’s Best Friend”.  Powerful writing. If you care what a cat groomer recommends, I recommend it.

Pedigreed cats are our creation. Some creation. Lack of functionality is ignored in the quest for pet cuteness. Why can’t functionality be the goal? If you’re going to “build” a cat, build one that works, not a cat who can’t breathe (tiny nostrils), can’t jump (truncated legs), can’t clean their own face (folds next to the eyes due to flatness of face).

Not all breeders choose form over function. Not all breeds suffer equally.  Some pure-bred cats thrive.
